While Day 2 of the Celebrations here in Nepal at Shechen had a more relaxed and simple feeling to it, with fewer lamas in attendance and the focus on practice in the warm, breezy Nepal weather tinged with mist, Day 3 resumed the festive atmosphere of the Celebration in full force, a cool morning giving way to heat and sun.

The day’s ceremonies began with the regular short prayer session and a tea break for all – not a simple affair given the large numbers in attendance. Huge cauldrons of butter tea and chai boiled in the corridors outside the main courtyard and at least 25 monks and many more lay Tibetan served the tea and snack. HE Trulshik Rinpoche arrived shortly before, on a palanquin of bamboo, and while appearing to have aged, his sharply penetrating eyes and warm smile seemed the same as always and expressed his apparent delight in the proceedings.

Then began the traditional offering of representations of body, speech and mind to Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche, which over the course of the day would be enacted by close to 50 different lamas, sangha and groups. Early on this session exploded into grandeur with a sudden offering by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche in the midst of everything else, which he followed with an offering to Rabjam Rinpoche right in front of Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche’s throne. The series of further offerings that followed, in a dense crowd of teachers, monks, photographers, Nepali video crew and the ever present camera of Matthieu Ricard could be described best, perhaps, as a kind of elegant rush hour in the corridor between the two aisles of thrones. Incoming and outgoing offering ‘teams’, headed by different teachers, some stretching 50 people in length, rotated in front of Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche.

At times some of the lamas, such as HE KHamtrul Rinpoche, would offer prostrations, and Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche would bow deeply in his seat, a sense of profound humbleness emanating from him. Representations, khatags, envelopes, prostrations, flowers, rice, the entire atmosphere infused with a feeling of great respect and enthusiasm, all took place under the four story portrait of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche as the day passed toward evening, and the concluding Marme Monlam ritual.

More reports and video coming soon.

To walk into the courtyard of Shechen Monastery yesterday morning, in Bodanath, Nepal, was to enter
into a display of warmth and devotion on a grand scale. A white silk canopy hundreds of feet across
rose and fell on the gentle morning breeze over the eighty or so lamas, all close students of Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, who have
gathered, along with countless monks, nuns and students from the West and Asia, to join in recalling their
teacher’s life and activity. As the concluding lines of Neten Chokling’s devotional film homage to Khyentse Rinpoche say, titled “Brilliant Moon”, ‘the teacher lives on in each student’s heart’. Nothing better summarizes the feeling of the Centennial Celebration, and surely, this is what distinguishes the path of Buddhist practice from being a limited worship of something outside oneself. However this wouldn’t diminish in any way the joy one feels in witnessing the presence of so many younger teachers at the event, like HE Khamtrul Rinpoche, and of course, Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche himself.

More news and reports each day.

One way or another, the majority of students and practitioners from all the different lineages of Tibetan Buddhism will have a connection with Kyabjé Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Some of us are fortunate enough to consider ourselves as his students. The present Yangsi Rinpoche, without a single doubt, embodies the previous Khyentse Rinpoche’s presence, wisdom and compassion. Now, for the first time, Yangsi Rinpoche is traveling to the west. This journey is a rare gift from His Eminence Rabjam Rinpoche and establishes our continuous, uninterrupted connection with Kyabjé Khyentse Rinpoche and the Khyentse lineage. I hope those who have time and space will make a point to participate in this program.

First posted on October 8, 2009

We are fortunate to send our first Visit Newsletter today, October 8, the
anniversary of Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche’s parinirvana. Celebrating
the Return! is as much about resting our minds on Rinpoche’s incomparable
example as it is welcoming with devotion his young incarnation. So today we
offer a number of recollections by some of his closest students (and our
teachers).

Khyentse Rinpoche and a young tulku

Please also enjoy this lovely photograph by Matthieu Ricard of Khyentse Rinpoche expressing such joy and delight in the presence of a young tulku.

“Frankly I don’t remember Rinpoche ever taking a day off. Of course there
were quieter days, but rather than catch up on his sleep or watch a movie,
he would gather some of his older students or students of his own masters
around him, and they would spend the time talking about their teachers,
recounting important events of their lives and sharing personal memories.
This was Rinpoche’s idea of fun, and for those who were fortunate and wise
enough to participate, even this recreational activity was tremendously
beneficial.” – Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, from Brilliant Moon

“Rinpoche was so courageous, not crying in pain [when undergoing an
operation without anesthetic] but shedding tears when he talked about his
teachers. …How can we understand his outer, inner and secret qualities
with our ordinary minds? All we can say about him is related to his outer
appearance; we cannot get to the depth of his realization and inner
qualities, as we cannot conceive of them.” – Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche,
from Brilliant Moon

“When I was in the presence of my teacher, the very evenness, clarity and
spaciousness of his mind naturally exposed my self-importance. I knew he
could always see through my self-absorption, no matter how significant or
complex I thought my story was. This was an unspoken understanding we had
as teacher and student. This kind of communication was one of the ways I
learned from him. This is what is meant by the teacher as mirror: The
teacher is the mirror that reflets how not only how we are stuck but our
basic sanity as well.” – Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, from It’s Up to You

Announcing the Dates of the Visit
August 5th – 15th, 2010

Events in Vermont, New York City and Colorado will follow a similar
program, including talks by Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche and Dzigar Kongtrul
Rinpoche about the former Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche; an empowerment and
teaching with Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche; a celebratory tsok, movie screening,
slide show, and more. The dates by location are below, with a general
description of the order of events. Details will be announced via email as
they unfold.
